Today, R.K. International School had the privilege of hosting an enlightening online session on genetic modifications in crops, led by Dr. Himanshu Sharma, Assistant Professor at Shoolini University, as part of the RIDS British Council Project. Dr. Sharma, a well-regarded expert in agricultural science, offered his deep insights on the possibilities and challenges associated with genetic modification in agriculture, a topic that is reshaping modern farming practices.
In his comprehensive session, Dr. Sharma guided students through the complex world of genetic engineering in crops. He explained the science behind modifying plant genes to improve crop productivity, resistance to pests, and resilience against environmental stresses. This scientific approach offers hope for enhancing food security, especially in areas facing climate-related challenges. However, Dr. Sharma also encouraged students to consider the ethical and environmental questions tied to these modifications, fostering a balanced and critical view on the subject.
The session was attended by around 147 enthusiastic students from R.K. International School’s classes 9 to 12, joined by 40 students from Takshashila Progressive English School in Nepal. This international audience created a dynamic learning environment, where students across borders discussed and engaged with ideas that impact global agriculture. Students were encouraged to ask questions, sparking a lively discussion that delved into the real-world applications and future implications of genetic technology in farming.
Through this experience, students not only gained valuable knowledge about a significant scientific advancement but also developed an understanding of the ethical responsibilities that come with it. Dr. Sharma’s session provided our young learners with a glimpse into the future of agriculture and the scientific innovations that could transform it. We extend our sincere gratitude to Dr. Himanshu Sharma for sharing his expertise and inspiring the next generation of thinkers and innovators in agricultural science.
Thank you to the RIDS British Council Project for facilitating this insightful session, and to all our students for their keen participation and thoughtful engagement! 🌱🌾
